Statement:
Lapissa, Luirojoen yläjuoksulla Sodankylässä, maiseman peittää valtava vesialue. Ennen sen paikalla oli soita ja metsää, kyliä ja koteja. Kun Lokan tekojärvi, allas, kuten paikalliset sitä kutsuvat, rakennettiin vuonna 1967 säätelemään Kemijoen voimalaitosten vesimäärää, saivat ihmiset ja luonto väistyä sen alta. Talot myytiin tai pakkolunastettiin. Puut, pellot, porolaitumet ja muistot jäivät veden alle.
Kuvan Kevääseen laitan esille teoksia, jotka ovat syntyneet tutkimusmatkoistani Lokkaan. Tutkin taiteen keinoin altaan historiaa ja sen yhteiskunnallisia ja inhimillisiä vaikutuksia. Käsittelen alkuperäiskansaamme saamelaisia, suomalaisten luontosuhdetta sekä pohdin sitä, mikä on elintasomme todellinen hinta. Uutisia seuratessa näen, miten historia toistaa itseään. Teoksellani haluan omalta osaltani nostaa esiin näitä asioita.
Prosessi, vuoropuhelu minun ja teoksen välillä, on minulle tärkeä. Taide on minulle väline, jolla pyrin ymmärtämään itseäni sekä maailmaa, jossa elän.

Kuvan Kevät 2019: Taideyliopiston Kuvataideakatemian maisterinäyttely
Kuvan Kevät 2019 -maisterinäyttelyyn osallistuu 51 opintojaan viimeistelevää kuvataiteilijaa. Näyttely laajenee Kuvataideakatemian omien gallerioiden lisäksi väliaikaiseen näyttelytilaan Exhibition Laboratoryn naapurissa. Näyttelyyn liittyy screening-ohjelma Cinema Orionissa, jossa nähdään pitkä elokuva ja neljän taiteilijan videoteoksia. Lisäksi Kansallismuseon torni avautuu poikkeuksellisesti yleisölle – ja nykytaiteelle – kun siellä nähdään kuratoitu videoteosten kokonaisuus.

Statement:
In Lapland, at the upstream of the Luiro River in Sodankylä, the scenery is dominated by a massive body of water. In its place, there used to be forest and bogs, villages and homes. When the Lokka Reservoir, or the “pool”, as the locals call it, was built in 1967 to regulate the volume of water in the Kemijoki power plants, both people and nature had to make room for it. The houses were sold or expropriated. The trees, fields, reindeer pastures and memories became submerged in water.
In the Kuvan Kevät exhibition, I will show works that have been inspired by my expeditions to Lokka. I investigate the history of the reservoir and its societal and human consequences by means of art. I examine our native population, the Sámi people, and the Finns’ relationship with nature, and contemplate the true cost of our standard of living. When I watch the news, I see history repeat itself. For my part, I wish to draw attention to these things through my work.
The process, the interaction between the work and myself, is important to me. I regard art as a medium which I use to make sense of both myself and the world in which I live.

Kuvan Kevät is the annual MFA Degree Show of the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. Kuvan Kevät presents new works by emerging artists from the Academy’s all four study programmes (painting, printmaking, sculpture, time and space arts).
